US Climate Groups Push for FEMA, NOAA Funding Boost
July 16, 2025
|The Business Guardian
The deadly wave of flash floods sweeping across the United States in July 2025 has reignited a fierce debate over climate change, infrastructure resilience, and disaster preparedness.
From the tragic Guadalupe River flood in Texas to severe events in New Mexico and North Carolina, environmentalists are warning that these extreme weather events are not isolated incidents, but symptoms of a worsening climate crisis.
Flash floods differ from traditional river floods in their speed and intensity. They occur when high-intensity rainfall overwhelms drainage systems or saturates the ground too quickly, often within minutes or hours. Unlike riverine flooding, which builds gradually, flash floods catch communities off guard, offering little time to escape.
According to meteorologists, these floods are now America's deadliest weather hazard, surpassing hurricanes and tornadoes in fatalities. Their unpredictability and linkage to short, severe bursts of rainfall make them especially destructive in urban zones with limited runoff capacity.
