India's Inflation Balance at Risk as Vegetable Prices Soar

A surge in vegetable prices, particularly tomatoes, in recent weeks has exceeded expectations and may result in India's retail inflation reaching 5.5 percent in the July-September quarter, according to at least three economists.

Data expected to be released on Wednesday indicates that the country's inflation had eased to between 4 per cent and 5 per cent in April and May, approaching the central bank's target of 4 per cent, and likely remained below 5 per cent in June, partly due to a supportive base.
