Govt aims 7-fold increase in wheat procurement from UP, Raj, Bihar this year
April 06, 2024
|The Business Guardian
In the midst of the ongoing Lok Sabha election fervour, the Central government has announced ambitious plans to ramp up wheat purchases from non-traditional states, namely Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Bihar.
-
The target is set to achieve a sevenfold jump in procurement, aiming to reach 50 lakh tonnes during the ongoing marketing year of 2024-25.
Addressing reporters, Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra highlighted the significance of this initiative, emphasizing the underutilized potential of these states in wheat contribution. Despite their limited participation, these states are now being earmarked to contribute 16 percent of the total wheat procurement target of 310 lakh tonnes for the year 202425.
