Germany's AfD Classified as Right-Wing Extremist
May 03, 2025
|The Business Guardian
Germany's domestic intelligence agency, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), has officially classified the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) as a "confirmed right-wing extremist organization."
This designation marks a significant escalation from its previous classification as a "suspected" extremist group and has serious implications for the party's future role in German politics.
Founded in 2013 by a group of Eurosceptic academics, the AfD initially positioned itself as a protest party critical of the eurozone and EU economic policies. However, it quickly shifted further to the right, especially following the 2015 refugee crisis. Since then, it has increasingly embraced a nationalist, anti-immigration agenda that has drawn widespread criticism and concern from mainstream political actors, civil society, and international observers.
