A Marcus Forss double on his full Trotters home league debut, plus strikes from Thierry Gale and Mason Burstow gave Schumacher and Wanderers bragging rights over Latics and managerial pal Ryan Lowe, with Paul Mullin replying.
Bolton's impressive victory in front of 25,565 fans ended a run of four games without a win against the Latics at the Toughsheet Stadium, including back-to-back 4-0 defeats, stretching back more than 11 years.
