Fiends who first found fame in books

- BY DAN VEVERS

ONE of the great scary creatures of the movies is alive ... again.

Frankenstein, directed by Guillermo Del Toro, will be on Netflix this Friday. Frankenstein and his monster were created by Mary Shelley for her 1818 gothic novel and influenced by her teenage years in Dundee.

Here are 10 other evil movie characters who first appeared in books.

MR HYDE

Robert Louis Stevenson's classic gothic horror Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was partly inspired by Edinburgh's infamous Deacon Brodie, nice guy by day but burglar and gambler by night. It's fair to say the doc's evil alter ego is much more interesting. Scots actor Dougray Scott made a movie version in 2008. Best line: "My devil had been long caged, he came out roaring"
