BEN WILLIAMSON jumped in a car after taking up an offer of a lift home from a pal.

- SCOTT MCDERMOTT

I know I'm lucky to be alive but I'm also lucky I can't remember a thing about the crash

Next thing he knew, he was waking up in hospital, grateful to be alive.

He had to be pulled out of the wreckage by emergency services after a horror single-car crash just before the New Year.

Supposedly, when he woke up in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, he watched Rangers 3-0 victory in the Old Firm derby at Ibrox.

Supposedly because Williamson has no recollection of any of it.

He was knocked out and everything, from the moment he got in the passenger seat, is a blackout.

And it's probably just as well, given the seriousness of the accident.

When the Hamilton Accies midfielder got home, football was an after-thought.

Getting back on his feet to walk again and spending time with his family was Williamson's only priority.

He's lucky he wasn't killed.

The fact he'll eventually kick a ball again is just a bonus.

If anything, what happened December 29 in Dunfermline has made him more determined to go on and make the most of a promising career.

Williamson broke his leg and suffered a fracture to his pelvis. But it could have been much worse.

Physically, his road to recovery has begun. And psychologically, he's managing to process the trauma he has gone through- and refocus on the game he loves.

Speaking exclusively for the first time about the incident to MailSport, Williamson said: "The night before I had stayed at my mate's house..

"In the morning another pal was going to his work and said he'd drop me off home.

"We were driving and the next thing I knew I'm waking up in hospital. I don't remember anything about the crash, I was knocked unconscious.
