FREAK ACCIDENT LED TO COUPLE ABANDONING CASTLE CEREMONY
August 17, 2025
|Sunday Mail
WHEN Lisa Haggart and Ian Whitaker decided to get married, they knew exactly where they wanted to tie the knot.
The bride-to-be had fallen in love with fairytale Duart Castle in their favourite place, Scotland's Isle of Mull, and the pair had booked that as their venue and planned every detail of their dream day.
But disaster struck when Lisa slipped and broke her leg in three places the day before they were due to wed.
Undeterred, the couple quickly came up with new plans and married in hospital instead.
Lisa, 39, said: "It was certainly a wedding day to remember!"
The couple have been together for 14 years and engaged for nearly 10.
Ian, a welder fabricator, proposed to Lisa, a florist, on Christmas Day 2015 by disguising a ring as a gift.
Lisa added: "I opened the present to find a gorgeous ring propped up on a cushion with a message that read 'Lisa, will you marry me?' I leaped into his arms right away. The answer was always going to be yes."
They decided to wait to marry until the timing was right.
In the meantime they and kids Esme and Eddie holidayed on Mull often, taken by the Inner Hebridean island's dramatic beauty.
Lisa said: "I had always seen Duart Castle when we came to Mull in the summer and wondered what it was like inside.
"We'd toured it last year and I fell in love with the dramatic surroundings and stunning sea views.
"I knew this was the place for us and we picked the sea view room for our special day, because of the spectacular scenery."
The couple opted to roll a family holiday and honeymoon into one.
They would enjoy a few days in a caravan on a campsite with spectacular views before and after the August 5 wedding.
Eddie, seven, was to be Ian's best man and ring bearer and Esme, 12, her mum's maid of honour.
Lisa's parents Anne and Andy and two pals would also be there looking on as the couple married at the 13th century castle.
