Les Dennis is currently on tour with the musical Waitress, playing Joe, the curmudgeonly owner of the diner where Jenna (Carrie Hope Fletcher) works.
"I'm still here, still doing it," he grins. "I love the different things thrown my way. I did HMS Pinafore with the English National Opera, a season at the Royal Shakespeare Company. My mum would have been so proud."
Best known as a comedian since winning 1974's New Faces, Les relishes subverting expectations at 72.
