Snooker legend Ray dies aged 91

SNOOKER legend Ray Reardon has been hailed "a giant of the game" by fellow players following his death at 91.

The former world champion died on Friday after a cancer battle. A dominate force in the sport, the popular Welshman won six world titles between 1970 and 1978, when he was 45.

Nicknamed "Dracula" due to his distinctive widow's peak hairstyle, he became a star as the game enjoyed a television boom.

He won the first Pot Black series on BBC Two in 1969 and his rivalries with John Spencer and Alex "Hurricane" Higgins captivated audiences and fans alike. He topped the world rankings until 1981.

The former coal miner and police officer reached the World Championship final again in 1982, but lost to Higgins.
