Oh my cod! Fish'n'chips batters the £10 barrier

FISH and chips, long considered Britain's national dish, now costs more than a tenner on average.

The price of takeaways has soared above inflation over the past year, fuelled by supply shortages, energy price rises and increased wages.

A “chippy tea” — or “fish supper” depending on your location — has gone up by 6% on average, with prices expected to remain high for at least two years due to a squeeze on cod supplies. As a result, the average cost of fish and chips rose by 62p to hit £10.38 last month.

Pastries such as hot sausage rolls and Cornish pasties rose the most in the last financial year - by 8%.
