SIR KEIR Starmer will begin 2026 with a flurry of activity designed to rescue Labour in the polls and convince the country that he is taking the cost-of-living crisis seriously.

This morning he appears on the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show for an extended interview. He will then press his cabinet to go further to boost living standards when ministers meet for the first time this year on Tuesday. And he will highlight measures taken to help hard-pressed commuters, inset, as they return to work after the festive break.
It comes as Politico's poll of polls showed Labour tied with the Greens on 16%, behind the Conservatives on 18% and Reform UK on 29%. There is open speculation Sir Keir may face a leadership challenge if Labour does badly in May's elections for councils and the Scottish and Welsh parliaments.
