New corporation could see thousands of homes built

NEARLY 30,000 new homes are set to come to Greater Manchester after leaders moved to create new 'development corporations' to get building.

In total, 27,250 homes will come in three separate 'mayoral development zones, spanning seven Greater Manchester boroughs.

They will be overseen by three 'mayoral development corporations' (MDCs), public bodies which oversee private development, and can directly build infrastructure too.

Two of the MDCs already existed, but on Friday (June 27), council leaders voted to keep them running and create a new one - where 17,000 new homes will be built one day.

Thousands more homes will go up in other spots across the city-region, but Andy Burnham said creating the new Old Trafford MDC and renewing the existing Stockport and Northern Gateway MDCs will help leaders 'free ourselves from the grip of the housing crisis!

He added in a statement: "Because of the decisions we've taken, Greater Manchester is now building more affordable homes than at any point since the turn of the millennium.

"We need to keep building on that momentum until we reach a tipping point where we build more social homes than we lose.
