WRU PLAN PUTS REGIONS AT RISK
July 15, 2025
|South Wales Evening Post
THE Welsh Rugby Union is planning to radically restructure the professional game in Wales - which could see the number of pro teams reduced.
A consultation process between the WRU, the four professional clubs Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets and other key stakeholders will take place in August and September.
It will cover the entire high-performance framework from pathways to professional club structure and the senior men’s and women’s game.
It is intended for the new-look structure to be in place in time for the 2027-28 season.
Among the key developments to be consulted on include whether there should be a reduction to three or two regional men’s teams.
There will also be talks about further investment in Super Rygbi Cymru in a bid to strengthen the semiprofessional game in Wales.
The WRU has also earmarked significant investment in player development and a national centre providing development for elite players, coaches and support staff.
