Council staff face rising violence at workplace

PHYSICAL violence accounted for more than half of all health and safety incidents involving council employees in Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) last year.

A report to the council's joint consultative committee said physical violence was the main cause of employee incidents in 2024/2025, making up 193 cases - 53% of the total. This was a sharp rise from 112 incidents in 2023/2024.

Overall, 361 employee health and safety incidents were reported in 2024/2025, up from 296 the previous year. The report said the increase can be linked to several factors, including improved awareness and reporting in schools. Of the physical violence cases, 129 occurred in education settings, mirroring increases seen both locally and nationally across the sector.
