We've been quiet about this

There is so much going on in our football, as we saw Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs playing in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup preliminary round fixtures, respectively this past weekend. There were also exciting league matches that took place while there was a Carling Knockout draw on Monday, with the FIFA U-20 World Cup kicking off in a couple of days' time.

Remember, we once said if one sleeping giant can wake up, this league would be something different and exciting.

I think that is exactly what is happening right now. Are you guys aware that Sekhukhune United have been in the Top Three bracket since the start of the season? I'm not trying to insinuate anything, but these guys have been unbelievable, and I need to give credit to coach Eric Tinkler, his technical team, players, staff and everyone at Babina Noko for the wonderful job they've been doing. You guys are doing a fantastic job, and this column is about giving credit where it is due. We've done the same for the likes of Stellenbosch FC and that's how we do things here. The game has really evolved because, in the past, we used to call some teams 'small' but when you look at our game, gone are those days, as anyone can beat anyone now. Do you guys remember that Stellenbosch FC, Sekhukhune United and Polokwane City were consistently among the top teams at the end of the season for the past couple of seasons? Teams are raising their hands to say they are not going to make it easy for anyone to win the championship. That is good for our football and the competition, which will take our game to the next level. At one stage, we had three unbeaten teams after five games with Sekhukhune, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs. To add to that, Chiefs had not conceded a single goal in that period and that was remarkable! The Betway Premiership is competitive and with surprising elements.

Will Pirates also suffer similar Downs fate?

Now that Pirates have contributed 9 players to the national team, the same fate that befell Sundowns could visit the Soweto team at the end of the AFCON.

South Americans are very fragile

Last weekend we saw Orlando Pirates make history by becoming the first Carling Knockout champions to beat the All-Stars team, after both Magesi FC and Stellenbosch FC failed to do so in the previous two seasons. Pirates were forced to play without several of their regulars as they are in camp in preparation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou's charges beat coach Manqoba Mngqithi's team 2-0 to be crowned champions, for the second time in a week. Congratulations to Bucs as they close the year on a high note.
