There are players who slow down with age, and then there is Washington Arubi. At 40, the Marumo Gallants captain is not only starting every week, but he’s also delivering match-winning performances, saving penalties, mentoring young teammates, and standing tall on the biggest stages for both club and country. Just before the international break, he helped his side knock Mamelodi Sundowns out of the Carling Knockout, and days later, he was frustrating Bafana Bafana with a heroic display for Zimbabwe. Now, with Gallants fighting to turn their season around, Arubi’s experience, discipline and warrior-like mentality have become priceless assets. Soccer Laduma’s Masebe Qina caught up with the veteran goalkeeper to reflect on the journey so far, the pressure, the pride, and the hunger that continues to drive him - even at 40.

Masebe Qina: Washington, congratulations on the win over Chippa United. Would you say that result marks a turnaround for Marumo Gallants after a difficult start to the season?

Washington Arubi: Thank you very much, Yes, I'd say that win came at the right time. We'd been playing good football, but the results just weren't coming. So, beating Chippa was a big lift for us. The first half of the season is very important, that’s when you need to collect as many points as you can. Hopefully this is the turning point — we just have to keep that momentum going.

MQ: Individually, you’ve been in such good form - featuring in every match and producing big saves in key moments. What has been the main driving force behind your consistency at this stage of your career?

WA: I think it comes down to believing in myself and knowing that I can still do better than I did in previous years. People often say when you reach your 30s or 40s, you start slowing down or losing motivation, but for me it’s the opposite ~ I still want to do more. Consistency comes from working hard, taking care of myself, and always trying to learn from the coaches. I push myself every day, even outside of team training, with extra workouts and personal challenges. It also helps to have the right people around you ~ people who support you and push you to keep improving. That kind of environment keeps me going.

MQ: Before the international break, Marumo knocked Mamelodi Sundowns out of the Carling Knockout. You saved three penalties and even scored one yourself! What was that moment like for you?

I don't regret anything

Once a familiar figure in the PSL midfield with spells at Free State Stars, Polokwane City, SuperSport United and Royal AM, Moffat Mdluli has quietly transitioned into a new chapter of his football journey through the fast-growing world of five-a-side football. Now representing Orlando Pirates Fives, the 40-year-old remains fiercely competitive, proving that the love for the game does not fade with age or changing formats. In December last year, Mdluli and his Pirates teammates lifted the 5quad League title, walking away with a remarkable R500 000 prize after dominating the tournament. In this interview with Soccer Laduma's Delmain Faver, he opens up about life beyond the PSL, his business ventures, and the rapid rise of five-a-side football as a genuine platform for elite competition and player resurgence.

Sibisi was also the weakest link

The issue of player selection is a tricky one, but this tournament, and the Cameroon game in particular where the coach applied a 3-5-2 formation, told us that the personnel he had at his disposal didn’t suit that gameplan.

It's not easy for Siwelele to lose

In the late 1990s, Lehlohonolo Seema was part of the youthful yet formidable Bloemfontein Celtic alongside his fellow countryman Lebajoa Mphongoa. The duo were recruited from Lesotho to Siwelele by the late coach April \"Styles\" Phumo. More than 25 years later, Seema is back at the club, now re-named Siwelele FC, this time as a coach. In this interview with Soccer Laduma's Delmain Faver, Seema opens up about his team's challenging yet promising first half of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season. After 15 matches that have seen the club climb from the depths of despair to a respectable mid-table position, Seema reflects on the psychological battles, tactical adjustments, and crucial decisions that have shaped their campaign. The mentor discusses the decision to relocate all home fixtures to Bloemfontein, the mental rehabilitation of players scarred by previous relegation battles, and the emergence of promising young talents like 20-year-old striker Siviwe Magidigidi.
