Soccer Laduma's Kamogelo Motecwane takes a closer look at the narratives, rivalries and ambitions that will define this season's competition.
Every edition of the CAF Champions League provides its fair share of subplots, but few are as captivating as coach Rhulani Mokwena's return to face his former club Mamelodi Sundowns. Mokwena's new side, MC Alger, have been drawn alongside the South African champions in Group C, setting up one of the most anticipated clashes of the tournament.
For Mokwena, this is more than a reunion — it's a full-circle moment. The 38-year-old's ties to Ka Bo Yellow run deep. Having worked his way up from youth coach to head coach, he became the face of the club's modern era. Yet his tenure ended acrimoniously. After guiding Sundowns to within one match of completing an unbeaten domestic season - only to lose 1-0 to Cape Town City on the final day of the 2023/24 campaign - Mokwena departed by mutual consent following an alleged fallout with Masandawana Sporting Director Flemming Berg.
In the aftermath, coach Manqoba Mngqithi briefly took over before Portuguese tactician Miguel Cardoso assumed the reins. Mokwena, meanwhile, embarked on a North African adventure that has already been eventful. He joined Wydad Athletic Club in Morocco, but failed to complete a full season, and was dismissed shortly before the end of the campaign amid internal instability.

Now representing Orlando Pirates Fives, the 40-year-old remains fiercely competitive, proving that the love for the game does not fade with age or changing formats. In December last year, Mdluli and his Pirates teammates lifted the 5quad League title, walking away with a remarkable R500 000 prize after dominating the tournament. In this interview with Soccer Laduma's Delmain Faver, he opens up about life beyond the PSL, his business ventures, and the rapid rise of five-a-side football as a genuine platform for elite competition and player resurgence.

Sibisi was also the weakest link
The issue of player selection is a tricky one, but this tournament, and the Cameroon game in particular where the coach applied a 3-5-2 formation, told us that the personnel he had at his disposal didn’t suit that gameplan.

It's not easy for Siwelele to lose
In the late 1990s, Lehlohonolo Seema was part of the youthful yet formidable Bloemfontein Celtic alongside his fellow countryman Lebajoa Mphongoa. The duo were recruited from Lesotho to Siwelele by the late coach April \"Styles\" Phumo. More than 25 years later, Seema is back at the club, now re-named Siwelele FC, this time as a coach. In this interview with Soccer Laduma's Delmain Faver, Seema opens up about his team's challenging yet promising first half of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season. After 15 matches that have seen the club climb from the depths of despair to a respectable mid-table position, Seema reflects on the psychological battles, tactical adjustments, and crucial decisions that have shaped their campaign. The mentor discusses the decision to relocate all home fixtures to Bloemfontein, the mental rehabilitation of players scarred by previous relegation battles, and the emergence of promising young talents like 20-year-old striker Siviwe Magidigidi.
