Cat owners in South Tyneside weren't caught napping when record numbers brought along their pets to a chipping and health check event.
Anna Malia with local vets and animal welfare workers at the free pet-chipping event.
Almost 300 cats-but just two dogs-got the once over by experts during the five-hour free open day at Temple Park Centre in South Shields.
Organisers admit to being stunned by the number of owners who attended, with some queuing almost an hour before doors opened.
Some even brought along multiple cats-then headed home before returning with more. At the last similar event, just 80 pets were microchipped or given a check over.
