Households urged to prevent burst pipes over winter

Householders are being urged to take simple steps to protect themselves from the misery of frozen or burst pipes this winter.

Experts at Northumbrian Water say a few simple precautions now can prevent falling temperatures freezing water inside pipes-causing them to split and lead to flooding, expensive repairs.

Jim Howey, head of water networks at Northumbrian Water, said: "Cold spells can cause problems for pipework, but a few quick checks now can save you a lot of hassle later.
