Ecosystem collapse?

February 04, 2026

Shields Gazette

The Government has finally released a report it previously suppressed, detailing how biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse pose a direct threat to national security.

It deserves far more media and public attention than it has thus far received.

It's actually a relatively accessible read, if deeply upsetting. If anything, it feels conservative in its conclusions.

Multiple critical ecosystems - including coral reefs, boreal forests and major mountain systems such as the Himalayas - are projected to collapse in the near future, not some distant century.

Others, including the Amazon rainforest, Congo Basin and mangrove systems, are expected to follow.

Atmospheric CO2 levels have now reached 428ppm, with the rate of increase still accelerating.
