VE Day: Let's party like it's 1945!
May 08, 2025
|Sevenoaks Chronicle
EIGHTY years ago today, Sevenoaks celebrated at street parties, bells rang and lights shone out as they hadn’t for six long years of war.
-
On this special anniversary, people will be invited to “party like it’s 1945”, and also remember the sacrifice paid by so many.
Many events are focused on today, May 8, declared Victory in Europe Day in a radio broadcast on May 7, 1945, with some celebrations continuing into the weekend and beyond.
Flags will be raised across the nation this morning, while church bells are set to ring out at 6.30pm.
More than 1,000 beacons will also be lit across the UK tonight as part of a moving Lamp Lights of Peace initiative and many will illuminate communities here.
