Council calls for outlying areas to boost city funds
January 18, 2026
|Scottish Sunday Express
AN SNP group has called on Scots living in areas outside Glasgow to pay tax towards city services.
Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken wants the Scottish Government to explore ways the city can raise more funds from its outlying areas.
She made the call in a response to the SNP executive's consultation on the future of council tax, backing a response from the council that said Glasgow was the “largest and most prominent” example of a local authority providing services “used by a population significantly larger than their tax base”.
