Think tank: Cut length of summer hols for schools

A PROPOSAL has been laid out that would see the summer holidays for Scottish school pupils cut in a bid to combat “fatigue” in pupils and staff.

Independent think-tank Enlighten has published a paper by former teacher and education leader Gillian Hunt arguing that the current school year layout is piling pressure on teachers and students.

She is calling for all schools to have a four-term year, as she said the current system does not “serve modern society”. Scottish school kids are currently in class a minimum of 190 days a year or 38 weeks. While regional differences exist, they typically take a six-week break during the summer.
