Would the country use less energy if the clocks stayed on British Summer Time?
Peter Willoughby,Kidderminster, Worcestershire
The process of moving the clocks forward by one hour started during the First World War in Germany in 1916, as a way to save energy resources during lighter evenings. Weeks later, other countries followed their lead, including the UK, where it was named British Summer Time.
During the Second World War, Sir Winston Churchill introduced a system where clocks were advanced by two hours, and went back one in winter, so they were still one hour ahead of GMT to increase productivity in daylight.
Last month, the Labour MP for Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard, Alex Mayer, called for a “major overhaul of time” and a return to this system in a parliamentary debate. She argued a return to “Churchill Time” could help save a combined £485million in yearly electricity bills - and reduce carbon emissions by more than 400,000 tons.
