Student invents waterproof slip-on cast for broken bones

Jake Inglis's invention is waterproof, slips on and can be moulded to a patient in seconds with heat.

X-rays can also be taken without having to take the cast off as it is “radiolucent” — being made from a web of super-lightweight “nylon” engineering plastic.

Jake, 22, hopes his design will improve patient recovery times and ease pressure on the NHS.

The student, who is in his final year of the BSc product design programme at Nottingham Trent University, knows the agony of a long recovery after suffering a vertebral fracture playing for a Scottish hockey club aged 17.
