Opposition MPs believe Rachel Reeves's own backbenchers will be deeply reluctant to support plans to increase the cost of petrol.

They are attempting to use Parliamentary procedure to quash the rise — and yesterday tabled a motion which could force a vote on it.

Mrs Badenoch said the 5p duty hit was “another attempt to clobber hardworking Brits to fix the economic mess they made”.

She added: “They can’t or won’t take the hard decisions necessary to get spending down and the economy back on track, so instead they just reach for more tax. We will fight this again and again.”
