STAN WAWRINKA'S farewell to the Australian Open will continue into the third round after the former champion survived a mammoth five-set encounter.
Wawrinka, 40, extended his time Down Under as he outlasted Arthur Gea in the longest match at this year's tournament, at 4hrs 33mins.
The veteran Swiss, champion in Melbourne in 2014, came from behind to beat the French qualifier 4-6 6-3 3-6 7-5 7-6 and set up a meeting with ninth seed Taylor Fritz.
After beating an opponent 19 years his junior, former world No.3 Wawrinka (right) said: "I'm exhausted.
