JOHN SWINNEY is facing major financial woes as the SNP lost £1million in the space of just a year.

- By David Walker Scottish Politics Reporter

The party blamed plummeting membership numbers as well as the loss of nearly 40 MPS and the public money that comes with them for their current dire financial situation.

According to the accounts, published yesterday, the nationalists have gone from a surplus of £661,568 in December 2023, to a deficit of £455,254 at the end of 2024.

But the treasurer and the independent auditor who wrote the report believe that the party is able to keep going and won't plunge into administration.

However, the spectre of Peter Murrell still hangs over the SNP as the party still owes him £60,000.

The accounts say the party still “expects its future release” to the SNP. The document reads: “Due to the ongoing impoundment, the party does not have current information regarding the physical condition or state of repair of the motorhome.

“Accordingly, the carrying amount of £41,284 reflects the motorhome at its depreciated cost, based on the party's depreciation policy for motor vehicles, and on the assumption that there has been no additional impairment beyond normal depreciation that the party is currently unaware of.”
