RUSSIA bombarded Ukraine with more than 800 drones yesterday, killing a mother and newborn and striking a Government building in Kyiv for the first time.

- By Matt Clemenson

The Kremlin-ordered blitz was the largest aerial attack on the invaded country since the war began in 2022.

Some 810 drones and decoys and 13 other missiles entered Ukrainian airspace. Officials said 747 drones and four missiles were shot down or neutralised. Hits from nine missiles and 54 drones were recorded at 33 locations and debris from shot-down targets fell at eight locations.

These included the cities of Odesa, Zaporizhzhia and Kryvyi Rih. The regions of Sumy and Chernihiv also suffered damage.

At least four people were killed and 20 injured.

Flames soared from broken windows as smoke billowed from the roof of Kyiv's Cabinet of Ministers building but it was not clear if this was the result of a direct hit or debris.
