dence and balance the books, I think the cap demonstrates fairness to working people and is a curb on the spiralling benefits bill in the UK.
However, the arguments for removing it are strong. The Prime Minister and the Chancellor are under pressure from their own MPs and much of their Cabinet to dump it.
Labour Party members are also keen for it to go, with a survey by pollsters Survation revealing that 84% agree or strongly agree that getting rid of the cap is the most cost-effective way of tackling child poverty. Compass, the Labour supporting pressure group that commissioned the research, argues that removing it would immediately take 400,000 children out of poverty and 700,000 out of deep poverty. They say in total 1.6 million children are somehow impacted by the current limit.
