Proteas Women riding wave of belief into World Cup opener

THE Proteas Women will begin their quest for a first T20 World Cup title against Australia today, with captain Laura Wolvaardt insisting her side's growing belief can match the challenge posed by one of the game's most formidable opponents.

- ROWAN CALLAGHAN

South Africa head into the tournament in England and Wales carrying greater expectation than ever before after reaching the final of the previous edition, where they lost to New Zealand.

Wolvaardt believes that external confidence has helped reinforce the belief already developing in the squad.

“It has been a bit different this tournament,” Wolvaardt said yesterday. “In previous editions it almost felt like a surprise when we got into the final. This time it feels like people want us to go all the way and win the World Cup. I think the group really believes that we have the talent in the room to win the tournament.”

Standing in their way first, however, are six-time champions Australia, a side Wolvaardt knows will demand South Africa’s best cricket.
