FOR this month’s visit, the Friends were prompted by Gracie Field’s 1930 recording of ‘Stop and shop at the Coop Shop’
-
Along with Gracie, the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers, the ‘Coop; and the building at 31 Toad Lane are so well known and ingrained in Rochdale’s fabric, that they could be taken for granted.
So, it was good to learn of the historical context and remarkable journey of the Co-operative ethos from its enlightened start 180 years ago.
