The Women in Blue didn’t just win a World Cup they won back the nation’s gaze, proving that cricket’s soul knows no gender

Long before floodlights and massive crowds, women's cricket played in the margins of history.

The earliest known women's match was between the villages of Bramley and Hambledon in England in 1745, The modern adoption of overarm bowling is traced in folklore if not a strict record to a woman. Christiana Willes is said to have bowled round-arm when her skirt prevented underarm delivery, sparking the shift towards what became standard. When the sport landed in India, the women's version carried the double burden of proving the game was legitimate and that the players were too. For decades, the crowds were modest, the media scarce, and the perception narrow: “women's cricket" meant a lesser version of the "real game”.

Setting the Stage: India's Women in Blue

The Indian women's national cricket team, known as the "Women in Blue", has been playing since the 1970s but often in the shadows of its male counterpart. They had reached the world-stage finals in 2005 and again in 2017, but the trophy eluded them. Yet beneath the surface, change was stirring: more matches were televised, more young girls picked bats and pads, and the notion of a full-time women cricketer began to take root. The tectonic plates of change quietly shifted with the launch of professional-led leagues, increased investment, and visibility.
