The Art of Speaking
October 14, 2025

"A wise man speaks because he has something to say; a fool speaks because he has to say something." - Plato
-
From the moment a child utters its first word until the last breath of life, human beings are engaged in the act of speaking.
Yet, despite speaking being a natural part of our existence, only a few truly master its essence. The art of speaking, like any fine craft, rests on five foundational principles : When to speak, What to speak, Whom to speak, How to speak, and How much to speak. Those who internalize these principles not only express themselves more effectively but also leave an indelible impact on their listeners.
The question of ‘How to speak’ lies at the very heart of communication. To speak well is not merely to string together words but to deliver them with confidence, clarity and conviction. Effective speakers employ voice modulation, controlled tone, and expressive body language to engage their audience. They understand the subtle power of eye contact and the rhythm of pauses. The structure of speech, the choice of words and the ability to connect with the emotions of the audience distinguish an average speaker from a memorable one. A skilled orator crafts his message like an artist, ensuring every word resonates and every gesture amplifies meaning.
