Reinforcement Learning: Future of Intelligent Systems

In the evolving world of Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning has emerged as a game-changer.

Before diving into Reinforcement Learning, it is important to understand its two foundational siblings: Supervised Learning and Unsupervised Learning. Supervised Learning is the most common type of machine learning where the system is trained using labelled data - that is, the data already has the correct answers. Think of it like teaching a child with flashcards: when shown a picture of an apple, you say, "This is an apple." The child learns by repeatedly associating images with their correct labels. Common examples include email spam detection and predicting house prices based on historical data.
On the other hand, Unsupervised Learning deals with unlabeled data. In this case, the system tries to find patterns and relationships in the data without being told what to look for. It's like giving a box of mixed fruits to a child without any names and asking them to sort them based on similarities. Unsupervised learning powers applications like customer segmentation in marketing and organizing large collections of documents.
While both these methods require structured approaches, a third path Reinforcement Learning operates quite differently, mirroring how living beings learn through experience. Reinforcement Learning is a type of machine learning where an agent learns to make decisions by interacting with an environment. Instead of being told what to do, the agent learns by trial and error, receiving rewards for good actions and penalties for bad ones. In simple words, it is like training a dog: you reward it with treats when it obeys a command and correct it when it misbehaves. Formally, Reinforcement Learning is a computational approach where an agent tries to maximize cumulative rewards by taking actions in an environment over time. It learns the best actions to take in different situations based on feedback.
