Why Dr Hargey’s cancellation is a blow to academic freedom

I WRITE with deep disappointment and concern regarding the recent cancellation of Dr Taj Hargey’s scheduled presentation at Sastri College, as reported in the POST, September 3 - 7.
Dr Hargey, a globally-respected academic and president of the Open Mosque in Cape Town, was due to speak on “Progressive Islam — The Future of the Faith — What is the Best Pathway for Muslims Today?”, a topic that invites thoughtful engagement and reflection.
Yet, the Sastri College Alumni Association, citing concerns about how Muslim parents might perceive a progressive Muslim scholar speaking at the venue, chose to deny him a platform.
