Raising the drinking age: comparing SA to international standards

I REFERE to the article on the debate sparked by the proposal to raise the legal alcohol consumption age to 21-23, the POST, January 14-18.
In a recent letter to a national Sunday newspaper, I called for the raising of the legal age for the purchase and consumption of alcohol to 21, and for the sale of alcohol to be restricted to certain days and hours, as was the case pre-1994.
Liquor stores closed at 1pm on a Saturday and reopened on Monday.
One would not dream of obtaining alcohol on Christmas Day, as we do now.
