Honouring overlooked heroes

ALMOST one week in every month when I perform my duties, as a part-time commissioner at the CCMA in Durban, I travel along Margaret Mngadi Avenue, formerly known as the Victoria Embankment.

I drive past this grimy monument, honouring a British soldier, Dick King, skirting the Durban Harbour, who broke out of the fort located in Old Fort Road now known as KE Masinga Road, during a siege by the Afrikaaners of the British garrison holding out there.

He sought help from the British forces that were located 600 miles deep south in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape, now renamed Makhanda.

I see an occasional tourist reading the plaque at the base of the monument. That monument is missing something or someone, for Dick King wasn’t alone during that journey or part thereof.
