Gambling is ‘an income strategy’

ACCORDING to 2023/2024 statistics by the National Gambling Board, online betting, betting on non-sports, casino slot machines and betting on sports, were among the highest forms of gambling in South Africa.
Sibongile Simelane-Quntana, the executive director at the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation, said there had also been an increase with those who struggled with gambling.
“In the 2024/2025 financial year, the National Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP) counselling line saw an increase in referrals of 55% to 4 166 (from 2 662 in 2023/2024).
“From the 4 166 referrals, 3 090 were problem gamblers, 902 self-exclusions, 134 relapses and 40 family referrals; 2 114 were males and 2 052, females; 1 727 adults (36 to 55 years), 385 elderly (56 and above) and 2 034 were youth (18 to 33).
