I WONDER why certain publications of Independent Media, especially the POST, have no qualms about regularly publishing Ebrahim Essa’s bilge on a weekly basis, especially when he spews blatant, malicious lies.
This is especially so in his recent letter, “The importance of English in modern India”, the POST, July 16 - 20.
No, Urdu is not “a component of Hindi” as this self-styled expert has claimed.
They are two different standardised registers of the same language, Hindustani, with shared grammar and mutual intelligibility in colloquial speech, but distinct literary and formal vocabulary.
He is conveniently overlooking a crucial historical context, or he is uninformed. Persian and English were imposed on Indians by foreign colonisers, Muslims and British — the former brutally.
