The Napiers of Merchiston Castle in Edinburgh were a famous Scottish family whose members included the founder of logarithms, as well as military commanders who helped to build the British Empire.

Also major landowners in Renfrewshire, they’re commemorated by Napier Street in Johnstone, which is in the news because it's the address of the town’s new Morrisons supermarket.

The land where the megastore stands once belonged to the Napier-Milliken family, who lived just across the road at Milliken House among the wooded policies of Milliken Estate.

Major James Milliken, who made his fortune from the West Indies sugar plantations, purchased the estate in 1733 from the Houstoun family, who were the lairds of Johnstone, and renamed it after himself.

On the Major’s death, his son - also named James - inherited his father’s estates at Milliken and the West Indies.
