Create a plan to tackle energy debts

I have been struggling with the cost of living and have energy debt and cannot pay it off. This has been going on for some time and I have tried to contact my supplier. However, I do not understand the bills and they cannot explain them to me in a way I understand. I do not know how I will pay off this debt and I just cannot afford it. I have now had a letter from a debt collector threatening legal action.

Create a plan to tackle energy debts

Many people are struggling with energy debt just now, so you are not alone.

Energy debts are a “priority debt”. This means you need to consider paying them before other lower priority debts because of the consequences of not paying could be worse and you need your energy supply.

You should start by checking the energy company has up to date meter reads to make sure the debt amount is correct.

If you're struggling to afford your gas and electricity bills, contact your supplier to discuss ways to pay what you owe them. Your supplier has to help you come to a solution.

You should try to negotiate a deal that works for both of you, otherwise they might threaten to disconnect you.

You will need to be paying at least what you are using in energy, with something towards arrears.
