One of my proudest achievements was campaigning successfully with the late Gordon McMaster MP for the installation of a monument commemorating 10 colliers who perished in the Quarrelton and Benston coal-mining disasters, near Johnstone, in 1818 and 1860.
The inscribed stone cairn in the town's Wee Wood is also a tribute to other brave miners who suffered agonising deaths in Renfrewshire - and whose sufferings are recognised and unrecorded.
