Fire at Viridor waste facilities

Emergency services Firefighters remained on scene throughout the morning

An early morning fire ripped through a recycling plant in Linwood yesterday morning.

Emergency services were called to the blaze at the Viridor waste facility transfer station on Middleton Road at around 6.45am.

The station - which processes waste on behalf of Renfrewshire Council - is situated right next to the local authority's Linwood Recycling Centre which remains closed.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service sent six appliances and specialist resources to battle the flames.

Four appliances remained on site throughout the morning while local residents were urged to keep their windows and doors closed due to heavy smoke.

Photos taken by the Express at the scene show firefighters dressed head to toe in protective gear hosing down parts of the station that may have still been partly alight at around 10am, and surveying the damage.

Several fire vehicles were parked on the street.
