Amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, two Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in Madhya Pradesh died Friday while a woman BLO in West Bengal allegedly died by suicide Saturday, with relatives in all the incidents blaming severe work pressure linked to the electoral exercise.
The incidents have triggered fresh concerns about the strain placed on teachers assigned with BLO duties and triggered a political controversy in Bengal.
In Madhya Pradesh, two teachers-cum-BLOsRamakant Pandey of Raisen district and Sitaram Gond of Damoh district-died late Friday night. While officials described the deaths as resulting from "illness," the families of both men alleged that overwhelming work load during the voter-list enumeration contributed to their deteriorating health.
