Discord in BJD over Waqf Bill

The BJD's change of stance on the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 which was passed by the Parliament in the early hours of Friday has exposed the rift within the party.

A day before the Waqf Bill voting was taken up in Rajya Sabha, the party had stated that it would vote against it. Surprisingly, BJD's Rajya Sabha MP and national spokesperson Sasmit Patra said he voted for the Bill as the party did not issue any whip on the issue. This situation has led some senior party leaders to take up the issue with party supremo and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik even as rumours float about a possible split in the party

Bhubaneswar, April 4: A group of senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leaders Friday expressed concern over the party's abrupt change of stand on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and took up the issue with party supremo and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
