Addressing erosion of trust in academia

The recent controversies engulfing Fakir Mohan College in Balasore and Gangadhar Meher University in Sambalpur have unequivocally exposed a deeply troubling compromise in the integrity of some college teachers.

- Bhaskar Nath Biswal

These incidents have not only tarnished the reputation of the teaching profession but have also ignited widespread public outrage, prompting serious questions about accountability within academia. Now, the time has come to take decisive action to restore the dignity, trust, and accountability that are fundamental to the teaching profession.

I recently watched an enlightening interview on a national channel where the anchor posed a thought-provoking question to the chief guest: “What is the most productive work in the world?” The guest’s response was immediate and profound: “The 45-minute classroom in an educational institution.” I was struck by the simplicity and truth of this answer, and I wholeheartedly agree with it. Indeed, it is at the classroom that the seeds of future development are sown, and the minds of students are shaped. Although teachers and students may not always realize the significance of this process, it is undeniable that the classroom is where the foundation for future success is laid.

Teaching is not just a profession, but a sacred trust. College teachers play a pivotal role in shaping the minds of future generations, and as such, are expected to uphold the highest standards of ethics and integrity.
