Winter wildlife wonders to savour
December 13, 2025
|Nottingham Post
WITH the current damp, drizzle and downpours and a more seasonal cold snap surely set to follow, you might be consider the most appropriate way to enjoy wildlife in winter would be to grab a book off the shelf or to search the TV guide for one of Sir David Attenbrough’s amazing natural history documentaries to watch whilst sitting in a fireside chair.
Whilst we might think twice about heading out at this time of year, only a handful of creatures actually hibernate in winter. A few other favourites may have headed south in search of warmer weather, winter still has much to offer for those looking to get close to nature.
When the first snowfall of winter finally arrives after the weird warm damp days we've had lately, even a light dusting opens up a world of wildlife watching; with opportunities to identify the tracks of mammals such as fox, deer, otter and badger.
Once you've explored the potential presented by looking down, winter is a great time to take in treetop wildlife. With most trees having now shed their leaves, birds will be easier to spot as they sit amongst the branches. Many species will be forming winter roosts which provide a great chance to see, and hear, birds en-masse.
