Student Calocane attacked and then stalked tells how he had to flee flat

Calocane attacked his flatmate "out of the blue" before chillingly stalking him in a months-long nightmare that forced the student to flee his home - but police never took action.Students Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, both 19, and grandad Ian Coates, 65, were stabbed to death by Calocane, who then ran over Wayne Birkett, Marcin Gawronski and Sharon Miller with Mr Coates' van on June 13, 2023.

A judge-led public inquiry into how the attacks happened is now under way, and yesterday the then mature student who lived with Calocane gave evidence.

They lived on Salisbury Street, Lenton, from 2019 until the student - named only as Sebastian - was forced to leave by the killer's behaviour.

Asked about his first impression of the triple killer, Sebastian said: "He was fairly quiet, didn't speak much, but I think we acknowledged each other. He was pretty normal, I would say." The two did not socialise but were friendly, he said, and were both mature students.

"I think in the flat there was acknowledgement, so we were friendly but didn't talk much beyond 'Hi. He was fairly quiet, fairly neutral."

His outlook on Calocane, who he saw being visited by nurses but did not know had mental health problems, changed in July 2021.

He said: "I returned home from university early because I had an interview. I had a flatpack box with me that I was going to use to send some parcel.

"He was walking with me for a few metres and then said he needed to talk to me, [and] took the box from me as if he was helping me put it down. Then he grabbed hold of my shirt and my arm and pushed me against a wall and said some confusing words.
